Module 6: Report on Covid care disaster due on Tuesday
The Covid-19 Inquiry will publish its Module 6 report at 12pm on Tuesday 20 October, setting out its findings on the disaster that unfolded in adult social care during the pandemic.
The module examined the impact of government decisions on people receiving care, whether in care homes or their own homes, and on care workers. Evidence heard during the public hearings exposed how years of neglect left the sector dangerously unprepared.
Patients were discharged from hospitals into care homes without testing for Covid or ensuring they could be safely isolated. Care workers lacked adequate protection. Visiting restrictions separated people from their families, denying them essential support and leaving many unable to say goodbye.
Matt Hancock claimed there was a “protective ring” around care homes. The evidence exposed a government that left care services to fend for themselves. The report must establish responsibility for decisions that cost lives and set out the changes needed to prevent these failures happening again.
Bereaved families fought for this Inquiry to secure the truth and accountability for the deaths of their loved ones. The Inquiry must not pull its punches.
Our pre-report briefing explains the key issues and the recommendations we have asked the Inquiry to make to ensure people receiving and providing care are properly protected in future.
